The word " macaron" comes from the Italian word "macaroni" or "maccherone".  It is a well known cookie which was prepared with a similar recipe like an egg-based pasta dish but by adding almonds.

These macarons were more similar to a marzipan though than a cookie. The name came about because almond was the main ingredient of the ancient macaroons.

But now a days, it is gaining popularity with the brides who want to do something different as it is consumed more as a food product than a dessert.  Besides who doesn't like anything bite sized at weddings ?
