Whilst Lehengas have been an integral part of the Indian culture - this traditional outfit has been experiencing a wave of reinvention over the last few years.
The modern Indian bride embraces traditions but also looks for something with a more global appeal and hence we have the reincarnation of the lehenga AKA Lehenga 2.0
Enter a new range of styles, cuts, and innovations that give this traditional lehenga-choli a more contemporary uplift. We've put together our favourite styles for the upcoming wedding season and as you can see the new-age avatar of the lehenga retains its timeless elegance topped with a twist of youthful oomph !
Cape Your Lehenga
Designers and stylists all around are oohing about the Cape !! This style was highly popularised by Anamika Khanna; and a favourite style and our very own stylista Sonam Kapoor. The cape is youthful, flirty and fuss-free which means we can say Goodbye Dupattas ! (I don't know about you - but I always end up tossing my dupatta on a chair so that it doesn't get in the way of me dancing !)
Designers Monica & Karishma of Jade suggest experimenting with an asymmetrical cape for a touch of flamboyance; and to keep accessories to a minimal to let your cape revel in the spotlight !
Cropped Tops Are In !
It was only a matter of time before the western crop tops moved over from our jeans to the Indian fashion scene. Generally seen on the sister of the bride; we're seeing more and more brides opt for this very feminine yet flirty look for their Engagement Brunch / Mehendi functions (especially in Goa).
Crop tops can be paired with a high waist lehenga or even a low waist lehenga (so that you can flaunt your bridal bootcamp midriff ) - it's totally up to you on how you wear it. Designer Manish Malhotra's pet silhouette is a loose crop top that hits the navel whilst designer Payal Singhal is in favour of keeping the look quirky with a statement maang tikka and colourful bangals.

Jack-et Up
Who would have thought that we'd be seeing brides flaunting jackets over lehengas ? Designers like Satya Paul, Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra are all in favour of this trend have have had long, ankle length jackets over lehengas in their recent collections. There are so many ways to wear the jacket (which could even
The Western Inspired Trail Lehenga
Bringing home the royal tradition of the West, a trail adds glamour and richness to any lehenga. This can be seen in the recent collections of Manish Malhotra and Tarun Tahiliani. The flair and silhouette of the trail on the outfit lends an extremely empress-like feel and exudes a vibe of all things grand and royal.
Bring On the Layers
Layered Lehengas look fabulous especially when coupled with different styles of fabrics. It gives an interesting twist to the lehenga-choli or lehenga-jacket concept. The layers add a the dramatic flow to the bridal lehenga. Jade by Monica & Karishma have the layered lehenga down to a T - we love their recent collection !
