Once you've got your A-List Guestlist (i.e. your priority list) sorted, it's absolutely essential that you get your Save The Dates sent out at the earliest. If you are getting married during holidays (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving) make sure you send out your Save The Dates at least 9 months in advance.
We tend to encourage clients to send out 2 sets of Save The Dates so that there is a buffer between when you expect guests to RSVP and when they need to actually RSVP by. The 2nd one serves as a gentle reminder to your guests that they need to RSVP their attendence.
